ART 175 NATIVE AMERICAN CRAFTS

This course provides an introduction to traditional and contemporary Native American crafts, exploring a variety of materials, techniques, and cultural significance. Students will engage in hands-on creation of crafts such as beadwork pottery, basketry, and textiles, while learning about the historical and cultural contexts which these art forms emerged. Emphasis will be placed on the relationship between the Native American identity, environment, and artistic expression. Throughout the course, guest artisans and craft demonstrations will enhance the understanding of regional and tribal variations in craft traditions.

By the end of the course, the student will gain practical skills in various craft techniques and an appreciation for the diversity and resilience of the Native American cultures expressed through their crafts.
